3 Tips For Protecting Your Phone At The Beach

by Sylvia Miller

If you are planning on hitting the beach this summer, you may want to bring along your cell phone so you can keep up with friends or take pictures of the sand and surf. However, you might be a bit nervous about taking your phone to the beach, since you could be concerned about losing or damaging it. Luckily, following these tips can help you keep your phone safe when you bring it along.

1. Keep it Cool

Out in the sun, your phone can become too hot and can overheat. This isn't good for your battery, so you'll want to do what you can to keep your phone cool. Consider keeping it underneath a towel to shade it from the heat of the sun, or use a beach umbrella to protect both your phone and yourself from the heat.

2. Protect it from the Water

Unless your phone is water-resistant, you have to worry about damaging it by getting it wet. Even slightly moist hands from a day of swimming can damage your phone, so it's better to be safe rather than sorry by keeping it in a waterproof case. These cases can be a bit costly, but are well worth it, since they can keep your phone safe from moisture and can allow you to use your phone at the beach without worrying about damaging it.

In a pinch, you can also use a zip-top plastic bag to protect your phone from the water; just make sure that the bag does not have any holes in it and that it is thoroughly sealed. If your phone does get wet without protection, make sure that you take it to a cell phone repair professional as soon as possible afterward, even if the phone does not seem to be affected, to get rid of any moisture that might be inside the phone and to prevent it from failing later.

3. Be Careful About Sand

Another thing that you have to worry about is sand getting into the small crevices of your phone. This can still happen if you have your phone in a case, so make an effort to brush your hands off before touching your phone. You can use a toothpick or other similar "tool" to get sand out of the crevices of your phone; consider bringing one along so that you can scrape away any sand before it gets further into your phone's inner workings.
