Factors To Consider Before Investing In Data Historian Software

by Sylvia Miller

If you are the manager of a factory, especially one that has a lot of machines on an assembly line, you likely need to make sure that these machines have a high level of uptime. You might not know exactly what is going with each machine individually and have no way to tell if the efficacy of a machine today is the same as the efficacy of that same machine three months ago. Data historian software might be able to help you keep track of what's going on with your factory. Here are some factors to consider before investing in data historian software.

1. Do you have the budget for obtaining and storing the data?

If you don't have the budget for the tools that you need to obtain and store the data, then your data historian software is not going to be of much use. You need to be sure that you are actually able to get the data from most of your machines. If you only have enough money to get monitoring tools for some of your machines, see if you can get reasonably accurate estimates for some of the necessary data from the others. You can use the data historian for faster troubleshooting, increased uptime, and lower costs and increase the amount of monitoring tools that you have later.

2. Do you have variable replacement or upgrade times for your machines?

If your machines fall apart at a consistent rate, then data historian software might not be as useful to you due to the fact that one of its main features is preventative maintenance. If you can already guess exactly when you need to upgrade or repair a machine in order to avoid downtime, you might not need the software. If you are unable to accurately predict when a machine is going to break, then you absolutely need data historian software because you are likely experiencing far too much downtime and need preventative maintenance figures.

3. Do you have people who know how to use the data?

Finally, you need to make sure that you have people who will know how to use and analyze the data. If you don't, the data will be useless. Make sure that you are getting data historian software that includes training for your employees so that you can put the data to good use immediately.
